As per all the big-wigs on Twitter, the Utah Jazz have added DeMarre Carroll to the roster. Some of you may not know much about him; so let's go over some DeMarre Facts:
He's 25 years old
He was a 1st round draft pick (#27) by the Memphis Grizzlies back in 2009
He's 6'8 and many places don't know how much he weighs (but more than Jeremy Evans, and less than Greg Ostertag)
And most importantly, he's now going to be on our Utah Jazz, so we love him and wish him the best! Good luck DeMarre! You can all follow him on twitter here!
He just can’t be traded until March 1st because he was a free agent signing this year. If when you’re on the trade machine, you can hover over the circle with the line through it and it will explain it.
It’s possible he’s a guy they considered drafting, but chose Maynor instead. Now he’s available and there’s not a lot of risk to giving him a chance and seeing what he can bring.
On top of that, if they do end up making a trade at some point in the future, he could be there to fill out a roster spot (especially if they were to trade someone like CJ or Raja).
That may be correct by why sign a guy for the rest of the year instead of 10 day contracts?
Between the 2 and 3 we already have Hayward who needs minutes, Bell who is shooting pretty well, C.J. who drives the lane better than anyone on the team, and Howard who’s looked poor lately, but I liked what I saw earlier in the season. Plus Burks and Evans who are riding the pine. I guess what I’m saying is that I don’t see many free minutes right now.
Maybe they’re bringing him in with long range plans thinking that they’ll need some depth at SF next year?
Probably over thinking all of this, not much else to talk about with how we’ve played the last couple of games.
i thought we should have brought him back for this year. not so. i want to know what demarre’s role is going to be on this team. replacement hustle guy if we trade millsap? veteran who leap-frogs some of our younger guys? something else? practice squad dude?
I’m not excited because I don’t see any minutes for him, unless it is in place of Howard. Unless a trade is afoot, it seems odd to make a move that isn’t at PG.
If this is in anticipation of a trade, doesn’t it kind of tip our hand to sign him before making a trade? If we need him to fill in for Millsap (for example), wouldn’t he be just as available after making that trade?
It’s a very odd move. The kind of thing Isiah Thomas would do.
I wonder if the FO hopes to spark a fire in the team by bringing in another guy to stir things up. If they don’t have any intentions of bringing Howard back next year, it is a good idea to get a guy experience with the team to prepare him for next season. Looking at it that way, it is depth for the future and a potential boost for the team right now. Like I said, this is probably not the main reason, but it could be a contributing factor.
Most teams have been cutting players like Demarre Carroll, in order to have more “roster flexibility” in order to make a move. The Jazz need a shooter, yet sign a “slasher,” giving them less roster flexibility to get the type of player they really need.
Those of us who have regularly attended a Christian church have probably heard the saying, “God’s ways are not man’s ways.” Perhaps it is also true that “KOC’s ways are not fans ways.”
This player signing sure is a puzzlement. It almost seems like KOC and Greg Miller are just messin’ with us fans a bit.
Greg Miller double-dared KOC to do it when they were both getting high after the Laker game.
(and for the record, the whole “God’s ways are not man’s ways” comes out of Isaiah, which is – at least originally – jewish text….We gotsta be inclusive at SLCDunk!)
Why did we pick this cat up?
I really hope he is behind Burks on the depth chart…. Or i’m going to lose my mind. Good luck to him though, hope he’s been working on threes.
Bebop - February 8, 2012
I can't understand this either
He isn’t going to snake any time from Favors or Kanter right? Both of them aren’t getting enough minutes as it is.
Wisco_Ute - February 8, 2012
a signal that a trade for raja or cj is imminent to open up more playing time for burks?
i hope so.
bigdog'sshades - February 8, 2012
Better yet
maybe they’re getting rid of Howard
Bebop - February 8, 2012
They can't get rid of Howard.
He has a no trade clause.
ForTheLove - February 8, 2012
NNNNNOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO!!!!!!!
you’ve destroyed my dreams of a Howard free Jazz team this season :’(
Bebop - February 8, 2012
I know. This crushed a lot of my dreams
the first time I logged on to the ESPN trade machine when it went back online.
DWest - February 8, 2012
Not a no trade clause.
He just can’t be traded until March 1st because he was a free agent signing this year. If when you’re on the trade machine, you can hover over the circle with the line through it and it will explain it.
SexualFavors15 - February 8, 2012
They can trade him if a team he likes goes after him
It really means they won’t be trading him to NJ for Deron.
Yucca Man - February 8, 2012
I can understand if the Jazz have liked him for awhile
But why a contract for the rest of the year instead of a couple of 10 day contracts?
JazzMT - February 8, 2012
So this either means
that someone will be cut very soon, or someone (or more than one someone) will be traded very soon, right?
DWest - February 8, 2012
WTF?
Why we get this guy when we have three guys (Tinsley, Burks, and Evans) who don’t get minutes to begin with?
Add another big guy as we ship one out in Memo?
king.nothing - February 8, 2012
holy sh*tb*lls
I would get my hopes up that a trade was going down…. But this is not how KOC operates. Breaking news, Jeremy Evans and Alec Burks to be cut..
zdid - February 8, 2012
More like Jeremy Evans and Jamaal Tinsley.
But still. Disappointing either way.
DWest - February 8, 2012
yeah, TIC
I was sticking with the “youngsters who haven’t gotten enough of a chance” theme.
zdid - February 8, 2012 via Android app
Oh, of course.
:P Oops.
DWest - February 8, 2012
you know he is a small forward right?
maybe he is here to back up howard, so we can have hayward at 2? or maybe there is an injury we don’t know about
gubihero - February 8, 2012
these were my thoughts as well
i mean it could mean a trade is in the future but doesn’t have to mean that and knowing the Jazz probably not
dianaallen - February 8, 2012
This may not mean much
It’s possible he’s a guy they considered drafting, but chose Maynor instead. Now he’s available and there’s not a lot of risk to giving him a chance and seeing what he can bring.

On an unrelated note
When is the trade deadline this year?
Caderade - February 8, 2012
March 15
Hopefully by then we’ll know if we’re a contender or a pretender (lottery team).
socaljazzfan - February 8, 2012
kyle weaver played 1, 2, and 3 for us
i thought we should have brought him back for this year. not so. i want to know what demarre’s role is going to be on this team. replacement hustle guy if we trade millsap? veteran who leap-frogs some of our younger guys? something else? practice squad dude?
AllThatJazzBasketball - February 8, 2012
New favorite Jazz player
That has shoulder length hair. GO JAZZ!
Loaf619 - February 8, 2012
i'm all for giving him a shot!
i hope he kicks ass
handlogten - February 9, 2012
Your user bio says you are a Nashville Preds fan. Do you have any Nashville ties?
Is that why you’re willing to give this former ’Dore a shot?
MTN - February 9, 2012
naw, no ties there.
i actually just chose a random team there because thats the one sport i dont like lol.
handlogten - February 9, 2012
I'm excited because he went to Vandy.
I’m not excited because I don’t see any minutes for him, unless it is in place of Howard. Unless a trade is afoot, it seems odd to make a move that isn’t at PG.

Although not the primary reason for signing him

JD23UT - February 9, 2012
That would be tantamount to admitting that we're "Rebuilding"
If I were a reporter, that’s what I would ask KOC. “Does this signing mean that you are in rebuilding mode now?”
MTN - February 9, 2012
A very strange move.

The bottom line is that KOC certainly seems to be a "think outside the box" kind of guy at times.
