The Big Turkey - The Downbeat - #657

The Big Turkey? I guess that might work for Kanter. At least the nickname comes from one of his teammates and not a reporter trying to force a nickname on a player. But when Coach Corbin talks about Enes Kanter and Derrick Favors, you can't help but hear a little grin in his words. From Jody Genessy,

The Jazz were running a routine drill in which the ball is thrown off the backboard, the rebounder makes an outlet pass and a fast break play is executed.

Only problem?

Favors and Kanter both wanted the basketball in their hands.

Glass. Crash. Clash.

"They were fighting each other just for the rebound to get out into transition," Corbin said, smiling about the good problem. "I was excited about it from that day."

One thing I would like to see Kanter do better is hitting the outlet quicker. He's grabbing the board just fine but seems to take a few seconds in recognizing where Harris or Watson are. Maybe he can teach them some Turkish so that they can yell at him?

At least we don't have to hear "Get it Memo Enes!"

The digital ink wasn't even dry on Paul Westphal's firing before Jerry Sloan's name came up to replace him. The Sacramento Bee said this (via SheridanHoops),

This all came down pretty quickly, which probably means Geoff Petrie and the Maloofs are still studying their alternatives. They can go one of two ways here - give the job to assistant Keith Smart on an interim basis for the remainder of the season or try to make a big strike with one of the established coaches available. The list of the latter is fairly impressive: Jerry Sloan, Larry Brown, Don Nelson and Phil Jackson, though it sounds like Phil wants to take off a year. Sloan would seem like an obvious choice here. I am hearing he wants to coach again, likes some of the Kings' talent, and likes coaching in small markets.

Then late yesterday afternoon, it was announced that Keith Smart, the interim coach, had been given a two-year deal to stay on as a head coach.

Jerry Sloan wanting to coach DeMarcus Cousins? I don't see it.

Again though, every time there's an opening in the league, Sloan's name will be brought up as a replacement. Will he coach somewhere again? Perhaps, but he's one of the few coaches that can have his choice of a team.

A happy belated 80th birthday to Coach Layden. I really, really wish he had some desire to do his own talk show. I think he has the perfect balance though of a retired life and popping up now and again for interviews and whatnot. Here's more from ABC 4,

Do yourself a favor and kill some time on Youtube and watch all of the Frank Layden stuff you can.

I've wondered why Kanter hasn't been taking many outside shots. It's good that he's working on his post game first according to Corbin but wasn't one of the big attractions of Kanter was that he had range to the three-point line? Does nobody remember the the video where he made every shot?

Kidding aside, being able to hit from the outside would open up thing for him and for Favors or whoever is playing opposite of him. I'd like to see how he puts the ball on the floor as well after giving a pump fake.

A fine interview with Coach Corbin at Utah Jazz 360 from last year. On how he became the milkman,

Speaking of food, where did you get the nickname Milkman?

The milk mustache started right here in Utah. We did the first campaign that I'm aware of with the milk mustache. Utah Dairy Farmers had a campaign going to drink more milk. I was the player they selected to do the commercial and to do the signage on it. I had the first milk mustache.

And thus started the fine tradition passed down to all young Jazz wing players. Does anyone know who the other milkmen were between Corbin's days and Brewer's (and now CJ's)?

No Way Jerry

would ever go into a situation where an organization had so obviously sided with a problem player over their coach. The only way Jerry ever comes back is if he trusts the owners and management enough to give him complete control.

I agree

I think Jerry would look for the right organizational fit. And that is not the Kings at all.

On top of that...

They’ve gone through 5 or 6 coaches in the last 5 years and they’re probably going to be moving. Probably the last team in the league that Sloan would go to.

Where are some...

Possible destinations for Sloan? Has to be a team that is ready to win, yet most teams that are winning keep their coach. The only two teams that come to mind are the Knicks and Clippers. Any other thoughts?

I really don't think Sloan would coach for Donald Sterling.

And I don’t think he’d want to coach Carmelo.

I’d actually say the T-Wolves. Nice young core, no real rabble rousers except maybe Beasley. They could get rid of Kahn and hire Sloan and someone he hand picks to be his GM.

Other potential teams in my opinion: Pacers & Cavs.

nah the t-wolves already have rick adelman. hes good enough
True, but if they keep faltering, it's an option.

Adelman hasn’t been good enough to stay very long anywhere lately.

I think the Pacers might be the best fit right now. Good owner, good GM (kinda), good organization, good core, low expectations.

I guess faltering isn't a good term

They’re beating good teams and losing to bad ones and even their losses are close games.

I would guess NJ

He and Darren had a really good relationship…oh wait…

One thing I miss about Memo was the way he would sometimes pump fake, then drive past someone in a big, lumbering, clunky way. It was ugly, but effective.

As ugly and slow as it was...

It tended to work. But you always had to respect his pump fake. That’s the difference between him and Kanter right now.

I met Frank Layden once

I live down in St. George and went to a Dixie Rebels bball game and me and my brother actually sat next to him and recognized him so we talked to him a little bit. He’s a really down to earth, nice guy. That day happened to be the day Sloan resigned too so I had the chance to talk to him about that. (I even hinted that he should return to coaching haha, but he said “already done that”)
Speaking of Sloan, I don’t really see him coming back unless he feels he has a chance to win a championship, but there aren’t many teams that will have coaching positions open up that have a chance to win.

Kanter's shooting at the chicago pre-draft combine

on that particular day . . .

his best shooting came from 15-18 feet, untimed. when the clock was on he attempted 6 less shots, and made 9 less baskets.

he was unremarkable from farther.

but it was only one day.

i'll take a 15ft range

though i doubt he’ll shoot that well in game from there consistently; at least for now.

#UnleashEnes

Too many twitter campaigns like this will reduce the effectiveness of twitter campaigns. Let him grow and develop a little. His time will come.

Its not only us...

that have noticed that he hasn’t produced much on the offensive end. In today’s ESPN 5 on 5 the were discussing rookies and 2 out of the 5 said the Kanter is the most disappointing of all the rookies. Not sure if I just had insanely low expectations but I have been mildly pleased with him, then again he was the 3rd pick overall so maybe my expectations shouldn’t be so low.

Yeah, that's pretty ridiculous. I think most Jazz fans are happy with Kanter's abilities thus far.
That's actually one thing I love about Kanter

he’s doing what the coach has asked him to do – focus on rebounding and defense, even if it means the idiots doing the 5 on 5 think he’s a disappointment because he’s not jacking up 18 footers.

They also fail to mention just how good he is at rebounding and defense

He’s one of the top in the league at rebounding, better than most veterens. He’s also scoring fairly efficiently. I think that’s success especially since he hasn’t played since the previous decade.

Your expectations are right on

He didnt play for over 2 years. Seeing him play the last 6 games has been an eye opener for me. He may not be getting the praise from the hacks on ESPN, but did they expect him to come in and play lights out. Not to mention that they are giving out these praises after 6 freaking games into the season is laughable

Remember when Brandon Jennings scored 55 early in his rookie year

And everyone was already anointing him the next big thing? I’m not saying he’s a bad player by any stretch, but he hasn’t turned into a superstar either. It’s too small of a sample size so far to start making snap judgments about players. Laughable is the perfect word to describe it.

I think we can safely say that he won't wash out of the league in his first few years.

And there are plenty of top 10 picks that do (i.e. Hasheem Thabeet), so to say he’s the most disappoint of all the rookies is silly. What about Jan Vesely? He hasn’t even played yet.

Their only taste of Kanter was the L.A. game

Maybe some of them saw the Spurs game as well but I doubt it. If that is what they are judging him from no wonder they are down on him.

He will be fine. One thing you can’t teach is work ethic. Ask Kwame Brown and the Wizards what happens when you take a young player without work ethic.

Who's going to the game tonight?

Hopefully they’ll get the win. It would be nice to be above .500. They may not have many chances at that the rest of the year.

I'll be there

About as close to the ceiling as you can get. :)
