Last night Los Angeles Clippers forward Blake Griffin had yet another "amazing, best dunk ever" where his hand barely touched the rim. I love his energy, but the spectacle is getting out of hand right now. In a world where we are calling finishing a layup with contact a dunk then -- well . . . it's nice to go to YouTube to see some real jams now and then. Here is one of my favs -- the Mailman dunking it over Kareem back in '88. The Jazz took the Showtime Lakers to a 7 game series in the second round of the NBA playoffs. This series is special to me because it galvanized my feelings for the Jazz. In a way, if it wasn't for dunks like this by Karl Malone I could be a blogger saying good things about other teams.
Thanks to TheMrBlue for uploading this to YouTube.
Wow. Karl Malone essentially neutered one of the best offensive/defensive forces in the history of the league (who was still around the top of his game back in the 80s) on that dunk. Kareem just didn't want to have any of what Malone was bringing on that and turtled on the court. What are some of your favorite dunks? Post yours in the comment section!

Deron dunking over Ike Diogu...
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=mHFQ-DpmObA
(Never mind the fact that this video was uploaded to YouTube by someone named GoDuke777, obviously someone after my own heart)
I was at this game sitting in about the 20th row behind the basket. I remember seeing Deron turn the corner and immediately standing up as he drove towards the hoop. It was such a glimpse into what I thought would be the next golden era of Jazz history. Too bad I was about years early.

I don't think I'd want to try to stop a Malone dunk either.
Those raised knees and flailing elbows… different era. Today that could be an offensive foul and a technical. Kinda sad.

this.

That is a sick dunk. Even better is listening to Stockton talk
about how he breaks down the court and processes information on who to pass too. Stockton’s IQ and vision of the court is just incredible.
I’d have to say that Price over Boozer. Mostly because Ronnie was a kid from my college and then i got to watch him do that to Boozer. Just a good feeling all around.
Also Vince Carters dunk in the Olympics over Weis. Just disgusting.

The Carter dunk is the most amazing dunk in the history of basketball. Jumped OVER 7'2" Frederic Weis
hk47 - January 31, 2012
Have to agree on the Vince Carter dunk.
He is probably not a good person, but that is just stupid. And I love the Ronnie Price dunk.
hamfist - January 31, 2012
funnily enough
the first “favorite Jazz dunk” that came to mind was also Price over Boozer.
moni - January 31, 2012
Certainly not the most amazing dunk out there
but I loved Taj Gibson’s putback slam against the Heat in the ECF last year. Everything about it was just flithy. The power, the style, the emotion. Loved everything about it.

Ronnie Price over Boozer

KJ over Dream
Jordan over Ewing
Pippen over Ewing
VC over the Eiffel Tower (Freddie Weis)
Karl over Cap (thanks for the vid, I’d heard legends of that dunk)
RP over Booze

Good commentary on the sensationalism of today's society re: Blake Griffin dunk
Doesn’t hold a candle to the Vince Carter dunk.
hk47 - January 31, 2012
The Tom Chambers Dunk is the best dunk I can think of that hasn't been mentioned
BobbyD31 - January 31, 2012
Any facial dunk that involved Shawn Bradley

One missing here
John Starks over the Bulls.
Man, those Bulls-Knicks playoffs from early-mid 90’s were epic.
Yucca Man - January 31, 2012
YES OH YES
Was watching some of those again during the Lockout. SO INTENSE
TazzJazzFan - January 31, 2012
Even though it was against us,
it should be mentioned that Baron Davis dunked over Kirilenko in that playoff game.

If Griffin's "dunk" wasn't a dunk....
…then somebody out there needs to coin a new term for such an awesome display of basketball-related athleticism. I’m sorry, but to say that was simply “finishing a layup with contact” is selling it quite a bit short, IMO. Do most guys finish layups with their head near rim-level, throwing the ball viciously through the hoop in a downward motion (because they’re up SO high), all with 260 lbs. of snarling Perk draped all over them like a cheap suit? Methinks not. I just don’t get all of the “that’s not a dunk”-smack, simply because he didn’t grab and pop the rim on his followthrough. Things like Griffin pulled off last night (as well as the Mozgov dunk and D-12’s “Superman” ahem, dunk from a couple years back in the dunk contest) are even more impressive that your standard, run-of-the-mill dunk featuring plenty of contact with the rim, simply because of the sheer altitude involved.
helpmeiaminhell - January 31, 2012
I actually agree here
Griffin’s dunk was pretty awesome to me. I loved how he was kind of grabbing Kendrick’s head and pushing it out of his way.
Yucca Man - January 31, 2012
Also because he is my favorite non Jazz player ever
and has long time been one of my idols.
Any Dunk/Layup done by Dr.J.

ForTheLove - January 31, 2012
What makes the Dr. so awesome is his legs
When he picks up the ball and takes those last 2 strides—it’s just awesome.
Yucca Man - January 31, 2012
by the way dr. j lives in ut
gubihero - January 31, 2012
He used to.
A few months ago I saw the news article about him selling his mansion.

I didn't realize he'd pulled off so many of those. Sick stuff indeed.
helpmeiaminhell - January 31, 2012
Any number of Dominique Wilkins in game dunks.
I remember Buck Williams dunking on someone real nasty when he was at Portland. He came from the right wing, elevated, got hit and just reached out almost horizontally to throw it down.
LoWBlok - January 31, 2012
The Jordan dunk off Pippern's missed free throw was also tremendous
hk47 - January 31, 2012
*Pippen's
hk47 - January 31, 2012
I was a huge fan of Clyde the Glide growing up
Six or seven put in his “official” top 10 are kind of lame—not even close to his best. But check out numbers 10, 3, and 1. Holy crap.

Yucca Man - January 31, 2012
I can't think of any specific Mailman dunk
What I loved about him is how he always stuck his leg out and his momentum always almost knocked himself down.
Yucca Man - January 31, 2012
Go on Youtube and type in "Shawn Kemp".
The Reign Man has done anything and everything imaginable when it comes to dunking.
Wilder. - January 31, 2012
Yeah, the last dunk in this video is about as posterized as it gets.

Kareem
Was that the original gay elf defense?
jazzwy - January 31, 2012
The griffin dunk was incredible
Please don’t be “that guy”
Baron’s dunk on AK was great also, as well as Evans dunk…err, offensive foul…on Crash. I remember Millsap having 2 or 3 great dunks last year but can’t find them.
