Tonight the Utah Jazz will attempt to avenge an early season heart-breaking loss to the Dallas Mavericks. I’m not going to write much here because I have a bad head ache. So yeah, not tonight, honey . . .
.
There is a lot of D in Dallas – they flat out shut down teams. They are big on steals and causing turn overs. Our side? We’re a little light on defense, but have a Top 10 offense right now. We try to not turn it over ever. Furthermore, we do play some defense by blocking shots. Ultimately, this is going to be a rebounding issue. We’re Tops in keeping the other team off the glass; and they are 5th best in getting rebounds.
.

We hosted these guys a week ago in our gym, and lost Mavs 94 – Jazz 91; and it was a game where the fans all over the world left bad about losing, but felt good about our team. Earl Watson was sticking up for the young guys, there were techs, there were dunks, and there was Derrick Favors getting tossed for being young. We hope to have the same time of fire in this game from our team. I hope hope hope hope we do bring it to Dallas. We have to see them 2 more times after this game, and I’d like to go back with a chance to still win the season series.
.
Dirk is out, Odom may start (I guess, I don’t know – I haven’t really done any scouting for this game). Big Al may not play either. Harris is actually playing better than Kidd right now. I’m amazed.
.
Sadly, the soloists this time around are going to be their bench against ours – mainly Lamar Odom and Jason Terry vs. C.J. Miles and Josh Howard. If we win that match-up, we will probably win the game.
.
We fought hard last time, and some calls didn’t go in our favor, and we lost. The remix this time around is to play with passion and finish with a win. There is no other outcome we demand.

Just want a well played, hard fought win tonight...
but I’ll settle for an ugly grind it out win if Favors slaps Dirk Nowitzki in the face in his street clothes.
jrclone - January 27, 2012
Ill take that
Well played and hard fought.
Nosanti - January 27, 2012
ESPN showing Dallas as a 74% to 24% simulated favorite over Utah
pacoelcid - January 27, 2012
Wonder if that incorporates injuries
dwillforlife - January 27, 2012
Somewhat-
It’s showing Al, Sap, and Devin as our top three players in the simulated matchups and Terry, Marion, and Odom as the Mavs top players so I think it simulated the game without Dirk, but since Al is game time decision it looks like no adjustment was made
pacoelcid - January 27, 2012
"let me tell you something - can I tell you something?"
in respect to the Karl Malone radio show – we are gonna win this game. or at least play damn hard. feelin’ it.
jazzed - January 27, 2012
LOL
When I was leaving my office he dropped it 3 times in about 15 seconds.
BC7 - January 27, 2012
bet he droped over 50 (at least) over the program
it was awesome. but i also understand why the jazz don’t hire him as a big man coach. great radio – PR nightmare!
jazzed - January 27, 2012
No doubt...
but I bet 1280 had its highest rating in years today.
BC7 - January 27, 2012
Big Al to play!
BC7 - January 27, 2012
So what does Marion go for tonight? 30?

Really like to see his effort w/ how poor his offensive game has been
BC7 - January 27, 2012
he does a lot of everything
but can’t shoot the ball at the moment.
he’ll be a weapon when(/if?) they start falling
G Note - January 27, 2012
Nice dish there to Big Al
BC7 - January 27, 2012
Definitely "when" not "if"
He’s got such a smooth jumper that’s just not falling lately
BJInIndiana - January 27, 2012
When it clicks for him
It’ll be great for everyone on the team
EcERyda69 - January 27, 2012 via mobile

I’ve rewatched the Toronto game twice already even though it’s a loss, because I love watching Favors get minutes.
G Note - January 27, 2012
i figured out what it is about Favors
I DIG BIG TIME he goes up strong – but he goes up strong every time. he’ll get some more offensive awareness to throw in some head fakes, ball fakes, redirection or whatever. but dang he goes up strong.

I like Howard more when he plays in his role.
He’s not our go to play maker, which is how he seems to be playing tonight
dwillforlife - January 27, 2012
Yep, he played like that last game too
pacoelcid - January 27, 2012
I don't really like him shooting unless it's a last resort
He should never be pulling up for deep jumpers early in the shot clock
G Note - January 27, 2012
yeah - he's already put up 8 shots

softdrinks - January 27, 2012
Good ball movement
BJInIndiana - January 27, 2012
Hayward is such a nice passer
dwillforlife - January 27, 2012
Is it over?
utahjazz-philippines - January 27, 2012 via mobile
Marion has been denied the whole game when hes trying to post up Hayward
EcERyda69 - January 27, 2012 via mobile
And Marion should by physically dominating him
Hayward’s man-to-man D has been unreal today.
Yucca Man - January 27, 2012
Haywood is killing us on the offensive glass.
hamfist - January 27, 2012
could put Kanter in there on Haywood
jazzed - January 27, 2012
We bailed them out by giving that board to Haywood
pacoelcid - January 27, 2012
rebs plz

He's a "really good dude"
pacoelcid - January 27, 2012
We need to get on the boards
BC7 - January 27, 2012
We need Kanter

Hayward has such a nice FT stroke.
Please let his shot start falling, thanks.
hamfist - January 27, 2012
Amen
pacoelcid - January 27, 2012
Another sweet pass from Hayward
BJInIndiana - January 27, 2012
Having a floater in your game is a great shot to have
EcERyda69 - January 27, 2012 via mobile
nice pass G
we’re still in this . . . surprisingly
jazzed - January 27, 2012
That might be an illusion
pacoelcid - January 27, 2012
yeah i jinxed it
jazzed - January 27, 2012
Holy frick
Hayward’s playmaking is just beautiful tonight.
Yucca Man - January 27, 2012
Haywood playing PG
That’s why I think he should be playing SG instead of SF.
softdrinks - January 27, 2012
Hayward, my bad
softdrinks - January 27, 2012
LOL
Boler got your keyboard?
BC7 - January 27, 2012
id be happy with Haywood playing PG for Dallas
G Note - January 27, 2012
yes yes yes
funny when he was drafted we wondered if he could play the 2
jazzed - January 27, 2012
what if we are wrong thinking Burks is possibly a PG,
What if they think it is Gordon as a PG?
SteelersJazz - January 27, 2012
Maybe thats why he passes first
SteelersJazz - January 27, 2012
He could post up and pass
SteelersJazz - January 27, 2012
Who is this Burks you are talking about?
hamfist - January 27, 2012
I thought we had solved some of our interior defense problems.
Tonight suggests otherwise.
hamfist - January 27, 2012
That was so an offensive foul - lowered the shoulder
pacoelcid - January 27, 2012
I've only been able to watch the last 2 min of the 1st half and the 2nd half but the refs are killing me!
wheatie_87 - January 27, 2012
yeah - not good
when are they?
jazzed - January 27, 2012
That actually hasn't bothered me too much this game.
We are beating ourselves bad enough that maybe I have just missed it?
hamfist - January 27, 2012
agreed
this sucks – so much for defensive adjustments at the half
jazzed - January 27, 2012
Timeout please
BJInIndiana - January 27, 2012
I think we are going to lose
Bebop - January 27, 2012
Please put Kanter and Burks in
We’re not going to win playing like this. We need a change before the lead blows out any more
G Note - January 27, 2012
I really don't understand
why we didn’t even play Kanter. I understand match up situations, but come on, Kanter is such a big boost offensively and defensively. Could easily match up against Haywood.
softdrinks - January 27, 2012
no offense with him in the game though
jazzed - January 27, 2012
Are we going to break out the ice picks or just pack it in?
pacoelcid - January 27, 2012
i wouldn't mind actually
game tomorrow against SacTown isn’t there? seems everyone is playing at half-speed

dwillforlife - January 27, 2012
Maybe Hayward is the PG of the future?
SteelersJazz - January 27, 2012
No
wheatie_87 - January 27, 2012
He passes better than anyone on the team, except Earl.
And he could post up all those Walls, and athletic PGs. And get run on some. But still.

pacoelcid - January 27, 2012
Nice run here
BJInIndiana - January 27, 2012
Kanter in, touches ball, gets points
Well look at that Coach. Maybe he should get on the court earlier than 5/8’s into the game
G Note - January 27, 2012
That's why I like Kanter in there
He’s almost automatic if he can catch it close to the basket. Meaning, he’ll either get a layup or most like get fouled.
softdrinks - January 27, 2012
Kanter the "filled out dude"

G Note - January 27, 2012
Except it isn't the young guys doing it.
CJ and Howard need to stop shooting imo.
hamfist - January 27, 2012
What caused this outburst?
the Utah-based member of Mavs Moneyball
signing in! Dang, my fellow Utahns are rude to me, they’d prefer I never post at SLC Dunk again because I have the audacity to cheer for the Mavs at Mavs Moneyball EVERY GAME smh
Brad James
rxmike12 - January 27, 2012
got this response which I'm considering signing up to MM to reply to...
‘f**k em then

rxmike12 - January 27, 2012
Aww..
I can’t. Well, I’ll reply above to what I would have said.
rxmike12 - January 27, 2012
This is what's frustrating.
PICK A TEAM. You cheer for the Mavs, Jazz, and Bucks, and no, it’s irritating to see someone who says they’re a big Jazz fan root against them. I get it. You like the Mavs. And it’s not that I don’t want you posting on ‘Dunk. That’s your prerogative. But don’t expect me to treat you like someone who is part of what we are here… Jazz fans through and through.
rxmike12 - January 27, 2012
Yeah, but he's just some guy
So…who cares
3 in the Key - January 27, 2012
Exactly.
Still bugs, though.
rxmike12 - January 27, 2012
Because he comes in here and acts like his a die hard Jazz fan like the rest of us...
can’t be true when you bag on the Jazz during Mavs and Bucks games. That drives me nuts.
BC7 - January 27, 2012
What's up with guys shooting 3's on us from half court?
pacoelcid - January 27, 2012
Nothing but net everytime, ridiculous
BJInIndiana - January 27, 2012
Has CJ ever played well in Dallas as a Jazzman?
BC7 - January 27, 2012
Burks! Burks! Burks! We want Burks!
softdrinks - January 27, 2012

I love it.
rxmike12 - January 27, 2012
that was funny as hell
jazzed - January 27, 2012
Same in the Raptors game
He struggles against the double.
allen aoki - January 27, 2012
Who I would put on the court if we want a chance at winning this thing:
PG: Hayward
SG: Raja
SF: Burks
PF: Millsap
C: Kanter
G Note - January 27, 2012
Hayward would probably get torched. I really wanna see Burks on Booby.
hamfist - January 27, 2012
What happened to Odom being a piece of garbage?
Oh right, he’s playing us.
rxmike12 - January 27, 2012
F'n 3's
BJInIndiana - January 27, 2012
Odom now killing us
pacoelcid - January 27, 2012
It would be cool if we didn't leave people sitting open for 3.
Just something to think about.
hamfist - January 27, 2012
And this one is over
When shots like that fall, you don’t win games on the road :(
G Note - January 27, 2012
I think we need our PG of the future, now
Especially on the defensive end
G Note - January 27, 2012
I'm more and more in agreement
but who?? anyone in this years draft?
jazzed - January 27, 2012
Id be open to a trade, since there are a lot of good PG's in the league atm
But how do we find a good PG that could develop to be great?
DJ Augustin?
Johnny Flynn?
Mo Williams?
I just don’t know
G Note - January 27, 2012
so what? trial by error?
Augustin isn’t happening. Mo Williams? for who? they’re not taking Harris? Johnny Flynn? There dumping him this summer it sounds. Maybe we pick him up for a year and see what happens.
jazzed - January 27, 2012

Jazz will lose games when teams light it out outside
It’s really a hit or miss. Jazz let teams shoot the three. They make it, they win.
softdrinks - January 27, 2012
Mavs are 62.5% from down-town
pacoelcid - January 27, 2012
Good teams will make open looks.
Stop letting them shoot the three.
hamfist - January 27, 2012
Yeah, I wish the Jazz would change their philosophy on D
just play D where ever they shoot. That’s more honest.
softdrinks - January 27, 2012
Millsap is working so hard to carry the team
wish he got help from our wing players. Someone else needs to step up on the wing.
softdrinks - January 27, 2012
looks like were gonna have to break the law
join the rebellion
gubihero - January 27, 2012
umm Burks anyone?!
dwillforlife - January 27, 2012
At this point I would almost rather him get a DNP.
Let him play the last 3 minutes so he can go off on scrubs when they bring in their third stringers? Meh, that doesn’t help him. Just makes him think he can play out of control and not within an offense.
hamfist - January 27, 2012
were making haywood look like moses malone
jazznerd - January 27, 2012
Big Al is such a lazy defender
When he has a big offensive game people don’t seem to notice/care as much, but in a game like this it’s an infuriating weakness
MORE KANTER!
G Note - January 27, 2012
Let's put in the youth team; get them some crunch time experience - if we lose, lose young
pacoelcid - January 27, 2012
Too late for that.
This is garbage time now.
hamfist - January 27, 2012
Yeah, he doesn't look fully back from his injury
He’s been a no presence this game.
softdrinks - January 27, 2012
I wouldn't call 19 pts, 6 boards, and 3 blocks as a no presence
pacoelcid - January 27, 2012
I wouldn't call his 20 or so FGA no presence either
Give those shots to people who make the bucket. Al is back to his old tricks of taking on the double team.
G Note - January 27, 2012
He's 9 of 18, I'll take that from Al
pacoelcid - January 27, 2012
He had a couple decent passes. But I am trying to not focus on the negative when it comes to Big Al.
hamfist - January 27, 2012
Just wish he'd draw more fouls when he shot
pacoelcid - January 27, 2012
he's playing hurt tonight
you can see it. and unfortunately he let’s it affect his defensive game more than his offensive.
still we need him right now. Toronto showed that.
jazzed - January 27, 2012
Long 4-point trip seals it
On to the next one.
allen aoki - January 27, 2012
Why not sit Al for the final 4 1/2?
Let him rest his ankle for tomorrow, get Kanter/Favors some burn?
BC7 - January 27, 2012
aye
jazzed - January 27, 2012
Duh.
rxmike12 - January 27, 2012
Coach Ty has a bit of CJ's Bball IQ
Usually makes great adjustments, sometimes makes infurating mistakes (no Kanter, too much Al, not calling that TO against the Lakers)
G Note - January 27, 2012
Except CJs been playing for 7 years. Ty's been coach for 40 games.
rxmike12 - January 27, 2012
oh of course, it's much more understandable when Ty makes a mistake
I think his coaching potential is really high, he’s done a better job than anyone expected thus far
G Note - January 27, 2012
agree
rxmike12 - January 27, 2012
I also think Ty is trying to balance ego's and player confidence
giving them opportunity to do what they need to do. tough job
jazzed - January 27, 2012
This game may be a good indicator of what February/March is going to be like for us
And it doesn’t look good
G Note - January 27, 2012
Really need to win tomorrow and against Portland to finish the month strong
The schedule only goes downhill
BJInIndiana - January 27, 2012
lot of road games
could very well be the case
jazzed - January 27, 2012
Yup,
Was hoping the Jazz have that fighting mentality going but today, they just don’t look hungry or sharp. (except for Millsap)
softdrinks - January 27, 2012
Kanter brought it for the few minutes he played
jazzed - January 27, 2012
Well, that does it for me
Let’s hope they respond better tomorrow back home.
Guybrush - January 27, 2012
So our GTD players are playing with 3 minutes left down 20?
WTF?
rxmike12 - January 27, 2012
It really does upset me that Burks gets to play when we are down 20.
Because everyone else was so effective tonight?
hamfist - January 27, 2012
Even if Burks stinks, playing poor performers sends a bad message
CJ and J-Ho need to earn their minutes. If they come out and put up bad shots, put Burks in until they learn their lesson
G Note - January 27, 2012
I totally agree.
And for the most part Burks has played well, in his VERY limited playing time.
hamfist - January 27, 2012
Burks has played well...
but it seems like his best minutes are only during garbage time. As with about 75% of the league he just needs to learn some consistency.
BC7 - January 27, 2012
He doesn't get too many minutes other than garbage time.
And I will take inconsistency from a rookie.
hamfist - January 27, 2012
Who should he be taking minutes from?
BC7 - January 27, 2012
Does raja need close to 30 minutes a game?
I mean he played fine tonight. But he didn’t do much against the Raptors. Sure he didn’t kill us, but did he do anything to help us win? Maybe, I don’t honestly remember. Also Howard and CJ have not played good in the last 2 games. And you could see it pretty early, why not give him some of their minutes. Feels like 10 minutes of MEANINGFUL playing time, shouldn’t be too hard, especially when our wings really aren’t contributing much.
hamfist - January 27, 2012
Raja played pretty well against Toronto...
I definitely agree that Howard and CJ have been less than stellar the past couple of games, but in Ty’s defense CJ has been playing well recently and Howard is just coming back from an injury.
If Howard doesn’t have “it” early tomorrow than I think Burks should at least get a look.
BC7 - January 27, 2012
Our wings have not been good or consistent all year.
Sure there are stretches where they look good. But no one has stepped up consistently. 10 minutes of meaningful minutes, consistent playing time, seems reasonable.
hamfist - January 27, 2012
Burks doesn't play smart though
look how he came out in those last minutes . . .
jazzed - January 27, 2012
As I posted below.
He gets 3 minutes of complete garbage time to show what he can do. What is he supposed to do? Play within the flow of the offense? In garbage time? No, he is going to come out chucking, and force things to try to make an impact. And it does nothing but hamper his growth.
hamfist - January 27, 2012
i want to see him play more too
but i think they have a good idea by what he does (or doesn’t do) in practice. i think if he earns it, it will come. it’s early yet. and he’s up against some long time vets in Raja and even CJ. i’d rather CJ get his shot to prove he still can be here. too long an investment we put in him. CJ is an unrestricted FA this year. Burks will probably get more than plenty of PT . . .
jazzed - January 27, 2012
The real issue is that Howard was dreadful
Play CJ at SF, bring in Burks as SG. Ugh.
Yucca Man - January 27, 2012
CJ is a fun follow on Twitter, but he needs to go after this season...
and let Burks get the PT
BC7 - January 27, 2012
Mistakes were clearly made with how CJ was brought along.
So a good idea is to repeat those mistakes and not give consistent minutes to young players.
hamfist - January 27, 2012
I think the new coaching regime will be better (hopefully) w/ bringing along the young'ns
BC7 - January 27, 2012
I want to believe you.
But so far I have been pretty disappointed. Kanter and Burks should have been playing in the first half.
hamfist - January 27, 2012
Practice (said in AI's voice)???
Have they had a practice this year? I think Ty has clearly shown this year, that playing time is given out, not earned.
hamfist - January 27, 2012
That's why the last 3 minutes is the WORST way to hope he develops.
Yucca Man - January 27, 2012
HE'S A ROOKIE ;)
lates boyz
jazzed - January 27, 2012
sigh
Not at you, but because it really is the Jazz way.
Yucca Man - January 27, 2012
He is a lottery pick with huge upside.
I am not asking him to start, or play RAJA BELL’S FREAKING MINUTES. I am asking for any meaningful minutes. ANY.
hamfist - January 27, 2012
everyone was crying they wanted CJ in the other night against Toronto though . . .
jazzed - January 27, 2012
I wasn't.
Sure CJ had a small stretch where he looked good. But the first half, and in the majority of his minutes, he looked bad. And not just bad, really bad. I was fine, in fact I preferred that Hayward stayed in the game.
hamfist - January 27, 2012
BURKS
dwillforlife - January 27, 2012
coach Ty, please,
lets play Burks, he can contribute most definitely. I thought against the Mavs, someone like Burks might have been a better plug.
softdrinks - January 27, 2012
Why do these Dallas commentators know Eric's real name!?!?!?
G Note - January 27, 2012
tweet em
jazzed - January 27, 2012
UnderKanter has 8 pts 6 boards in only 9 minutes
pacoelcid - January 27, 2012
We need a wing player to step up and be the man
among Hayward, Bell, Howard, and CJ no one scored in double digits. We desperately need big time contribution from our wings.
softdrinks - January 27, 2012
Agreed, everyone's collapsing on the bigs when they get the ball
pacoelcid - January 27, 2012
A bank 3 by CJ?
BC7 - January 27, 2012
That Yi dunk is why Kanter wasn't playing Yi
jazzed - January 27, 2012
This game has been frustrating to watch
But these last few mins of the rookie’s dulls the pain somewhat.
I just really wish they got more burn.
G Note - January 27, 2012
What is the law for the 2nd team to score 100 in the game?
BC7 - January 27, 2012
Brad's team always wins.
#pickateam
rxmike12 - January 27, 2012
dallas commentators are polite =p
Bryan Chang - January 27, 2012
this
jazzed - January 27, 2012
Kanter had 12 and 7
…why didn’t he play in the first half again? Studly.
3 in the Key - January 27, 2012
they loved Kanter!
Hope Cuban doesnt start clearing cap for 2015
G Note - January 27, 2012
Saved his energy for the 2nd half
pacoelcid - January 27, 2012
If Amar even thinks about putting Al in his Jazz Quintet I'll throw a fit.
Yucca Man - January 27, 2012
I thought he was in their by default
3 in the Key - January 27, 2012
wow...there...disorienting loss
3 in the Key - January 27, 2012
My vote is he cuts it to a trio anyway
5 guys don’t always deserve a call out. and it’s too long. ;)
jazzed - January 27, 2012
stats don't tell the story
because they don’t track a stat for shooting terrible wheezy’s over 2 guys taller than you
G Note - January 27, 2012
he had a good game for playing hurt
i thought – and want to give him credit for that – could have been worse
jazzed - January 27, 2012
+1
Jeromice - January 27, 2012
this is more of what i expect this next month
hopefully wins against Sac manana and Portland we can hope
jazzed - January 27, 2012
Look at Linas Kleiza's line tonight
0pts, 0-5 (0-2 3pt) 5reb, 4ast, 1 BA
Bryan Chang - January 27, 2012
That's hilarious and infuriating
3 in the Key - January 27, 2012
That'll be Beaubois' line next Mavs game too.
Yucca Man - January 27, 2012
And Odom. And Yi.
G Note - January 27, 2012
sigh...such is life
Bryan Chang - January 27, 2012
Raptors game didn't make me mad
This one made me mad.
Yucca Man - January 27, 2012
this
BC7 - January 27, 2012
I lied...
I read that wrong. The Raps game made me mad… this one didn’t.
BC7 - January 27, 2012
opposite here
we should have won that game. i didn’t expect a win here.
jazzed - January 27, 2012
It made me made because Ty did what I dreaded at the beginning of the season.
Played vets (Al & Howard in this case) even though they sucked and left the rookies on the bench. Kanter, thankfully, came out in the second half, but the Burks thing was unbelievable. Especially since he could have freaking guarded Beaubois.
Yucca Man - January 27, 2012
I totally agree with Yucca.
But that comes as no surprise I am sure.
hamfist - January 27, 2012
no surprise ;)
peace out dudes
jazzed - January 27, 2012
Agreed, this one was more about effort
Seemed liked they quit after the Mavs hit a couple of threes and didn’t even show up defensively at all in the fourth.
But I suppose they weren’t exactly shutting them down earlier,
jjrosk - January 27, 2012
Kanter had the best +/-
of all the Jazz players, he had +/- 9
Bryan Chang - January 27, 2012
Howard and Big Al had the lowest
+/- of -18
Bryan Chang - January 27, 2012
sry that looks confusing, Kanter had +9
Bryan Chang - January 27, 2012
I don't put too much into that stat, like most people.
But I think Kanter played the best tonight. Well other than Millsap, who is better than everyone. Sure he didn’t play perfect, but he looked good.
hamfist - January 27, 2012
Agreed.
Liked Hayward’s stats but his actual play wasn’t perfect. Still deferring on shots he should be taking.
Also was impressed with Favors, who only had 17 minutes (WTF Ty?)
G Note - January 27, 2012
A chunk that of that was garbage time.
He played ok. And Hayward did a lot of really good things on both offense and defense, but he for sure could have been more assertive. But at this point with him I am just happy to see him shoot it at all with confidence.
