Paul Millsap comes in at #17 on Kelly Dwyer's rankings for PFs this coming season,
Why does Paul drop four spots despite the absence of Carlos Boozer(notes) in the Utah lineup?
Well, though he has the talent for it, Paul's not going to just step in and start handing out 20 and 10s.
You could make a good case for Sap to have a better season that the guys 13-16. He's just behind Antawn Jamison, Carl Landry, Luis Scola, and Troy Murphy.
Except for Jamison, the rest of those players made jumps in his rankings from last season. He doesn't think that Paul will be putting up 20 & 10, and he won't, but he also takes the month of March for Scola when he put up 20 & 10 into why he ranked him higher. He admits though that he doesn't think he'll get that many minutes and touches. With Yao looking like he'll be back, he's not going to average that for a season.
Hoops World is stating that Fesenko could have got about a 3-year, $9M deal on the open market had he been an unrestricted free agent. The only reason he didn't was that the Jazz had told teams that they would likely match.
$3M a year seems pretty steep for a player that has yet to prove that he can be consistent. Big men will always be at a premium, but I don't know if the Jazz match that amount.
Maybe there's something behind signing character players. The Nuggets continue their tumultuous off-season with J.R. Smith trying to choke a player he was playing a pickup game with. According to other stories about the incident, the other player involved was DLeague player who's never seen NBA action.
There wasn't enough to press charges but I wonder if the league will still investigate. Smith is on the last year of his deal worth about $6M.
This could end up being an ugly, ugly season in Denver.

D'oh
Way to misread the poll question
El Aguacil - August 26, 2010
No you didn't, rumor has it that the Jazz are playing Fes at shooting guard this season.

Snoop Dogg in da house.
1- Pretty fair list. You can make arguments for all of those guys ahead of Millsap. I would take Milly over Scola, Jamison and Landry this season. I think Murphy is going to have a good year in New Jersey.
2- It’s hard to believe that. Who would offer him 3 years, $9 million? And it was definitely before the Jazz traded for Jefferson and signed Raja Bell, because if a team made Fes that offer today, they wouldn’t be able to match. So if it is true, the team in question already used up all their cap space. I’m guessing it was the Timberwolves. Only they would bid so outrageously for a center they don’t need.
8- It will be really hard for the Nuggets to compete this year. If they trade Smith, it will be for a minimal player or possibly just picks or something. Smith won them some games and probably lost them some games, but if they trade him, they have no scoring off the bench other than Ty Lawson. Remember that they didn’t have a first round pick this draft.
4- Who is that old man? My bet is that he didn’t know who snoop was, but assumed that a black man in a Jazz jersey, was probably a player from the team and wanted a picture with him. He’s probably bragging to all his friends today, “I got a picture with Jeremy Evans last night!”
5- Deron and AK are your right answers for that question. Both shoot a career 46.5 % and both have maxed out at about 50.5 %. I’m so excited to see how this year pans out.

I would submit that both Memphis and New York were capable of bidding so outrageously. Moreover, Indiana is always looking to collect under-performing white big men even if they would have had to go the sign-and-trade route.
El Aguacil - August 26, 2010
Snoop in The Lake!
1- Millsap will shine with starter minutes and prove everyone wrong, unleash The Beast!
2- $9 for 3 years? Fes would just sit back and collect the checks, Jazz need to keep him on a year contract for under $2 million. Fes shouldn’t get paid regardless.
8- Does this really suprise anyone? J.R. killed his friend by speeding and now is choking ppl on the court? Sounds like a true Thuggett! Denver should extend him based on that alone, not try and trade him.
4- Snoop rocking the Malone jersey is too good and he actually looks pretty fly in the alternate baby blue… yeah SnoopDogg, way to represent the SLC!
5- I voted D-Will, no ankle injury, no wrist injury, nothin but net!

i took millsap over landry in my fantasy league
part because he’s my favorite player, part because he rebounds and blocks shots better, and part because i’m pretty sure he has the ability to put up better scoring numbers. will landry even start in sacramento? i figure jason thompson will eat up a lot of pf minutes.

2. i think that may just be stu lash talking . . . making waves. before the dalembert trade the kings were totally hot for Fes. not so any more. but there is always a market to size in this league. (anyone remember jon konkac / jim mcilvine / bunch of other big guys who got stupid money just for being big)
5. fg%, has to be ak. out of that group he takes the most shots close to the rim, and does not shoot too frequently.
AllThatJazzBasketball - August 26, 2010
Al Jefferson is going to lead the team in FG%
I picked “another player” in the poll, thinking that Al Jefferson is going to get many easy baskets close to the rim. His FG% last year was .498. I can see that figure increasing significantly now that he is playing with a better PG. Carlos Boozer was .562 last year, leading the team. Its going to be either him or Sap.
brock38 - August 26, 2010
never mind
I just looked at the question in its fullness. Then i would say AK.

What BBJ failed to tell anyone is that this is a ACT-prep course masquerading as a sports blog.
Today was reading comprehension day. Amar’s post’s are math reviews.
clarkpojo - August 26, 2010
Yeah, the wording was bad
Maybe it’s I who needs to take the ACT again. I’ve updated it now though to make a little more sense.
Basketball John - August 26, 2010
I had the same problem. My first thought was: “But it isn’t going to be a guard/wing to lead in FG%, it’s going to be a big!” Then after I voted/posted I realize that he meant, “Which player will have the highest percentage among the guards/wings?”

Kelly Dwyer
1- If you put stock into anything he says, you’re making a mistake. He’s an idiot. He’s a terrible writer, too.

4. Is Snoop with that guy from Channel 2 news? I can’t think of his name but it sure looks like him.

I swear Dwyer is just pushing Jazz fan buttons because he loves the hate mail. He’s like Bill Simmons from 3 years ago.
darkcoupon - August 27, 2010
I like Dwyer.
His posts are opinion. If you don’t like them, well don’t read them. No matter how he ranks people there are going to be fans who disagree with him. I think the key is not to take it seriously. He’s not trying to be Mel Kiper… sheesh.
ForTheLove - August 27, 2010
I Agree with All Your Points
I should realize this isn’t the Yahoo! message forums. I don’t spend as much time on here as I should! Based on the comments Dwyer gets on all his blog posts at Yahoo!, there are a lot of people who take his stuff way too seriously.
My problem with him is that he takes himself way too seriously at times. His writing style can be very sanctimonious. He’ll spew out stats to show how Player A is better than Player B, then he’ll still rank Player A 14 spots below Player B, and won’t explain why in any concrete terms.
I probably over-dramatized it in my previous post by saying he’s an “idiot” and a “terrible writer,” because I do enjoy reading his columns at times. The piece he did on Karl Malone, for example, was very good. Overall, I just don’t care for him that much. But, like you said, I don’t have to read the columns!
Peace.
Dr. Dunkenstein - August 27, 2010
best way to interact with him
is via his chats at the yahoo bdl website on wed. he’s not as unreasonable as we may think. he’s more hard headed on twitter, but if you look at the comments section you see that a) a lot of people are very dumb and b) he gets accused of every possible bias. last season he was very high on the jazz team.
AllThatJazzBasketball - August 27, 2010
Agreed
He puts up with alot of crap for just writing a blog. If he wanted to rank them based on stats then that’s what he’d do, that’s not what he does though.
