Carlos Boozer on why he left Utah (from DIME),
Dime: Why was now the best time to leave Utah?
CB: Ah, I was a free agent number one (laughs). And number two, obviously I grew up (as a player) in Utah and had a great time out there with Coach (Jerry) Sloanand with my teammates. I definitely miss a lot of things about Utah - and I had great teammates and coaches, and the city embraced me - so it was great to be a part of it. But at this time, this was the best opportunity for me this summer and I look forward to it.
I'm not blaming him but cash was still the biggest factor. Of course I don't expect him to bring that up in an interview like this. How come it's my worst fear that he'll have a huge, huge season in Chicago? It's like the breaking up with a girlfriend analogy.
Of course he won't be able to claim the boos at the ESA this season will be calls of Booze. Is there something else that could be said instead of booing? Too bad you couldn't orchestrate a mass silence or something of that nature. Then you could have one Jazz fan scream a single insult.
I never knew Phil Johnson the head coach. He's filled in at times for Sloan due to illness, ejections, etc. He's likely to be handed the job when Jerry leaves, if he wants it. I'm not alone in assuming though that he'll step down when Sloan does, whenever that may be.
NBA.com has an interesting piece on the assistant coaches in the league that used to be head coaches. Maybe a little surprisingly, none of them has an overall winning percentage greater than .500 as a head coach. The reason they're not a head coach still is because of that very reason but you would have to assume that at least a few of them would have had an overall winning record.
Phil proceeded Jerry of course as the coach of the Bulls. Before that, his turnaround of the Kansas City Kings earned him a COY award.
I don't have a doubt that if Johnson was to become the head coach, he would do well with the team but maybe there's something to be an assistant coach. Like the article mentions, there's a lot less crap you have to deal with as an assistant compared to being the guy. Had Johnson wanted to be a head coach again, he probably could have landed a spot somewhere else by now.
We'll likely see dual retirements the day Sloan calls it a day.
We'll be tweaking the logo a bit for the SLC to stand out some more. I drew up these though. Not saying we're switching the site logo, but for t-shirts and the like they might work better. Any thoughts on them?
It looks like the Jazz are going to be doing some more mobile promotions for people at the game and at home. You'll have the typical polls/trivia stuff but they'll also be putting pictures and texts on the big screen. You can see some demos from txtstation's website.
Here's the Jazz's VP of Sales & Marketing, Jim Olson's take,
We chose Txtstation because they understand that interactivity is paramount to game-day entertainment. This is also a great way to build our database and activate our sponsors
That will be the biggest reason for this. It's another revenue stream for the team as they attach a sponsor to this. That's not a bad thing. More money=better players, hopefully. They have to pay for those renovations at the ESA somehow.
I imagine you'd still be able to text pics and text from home even though you're not at the game. Though things are sure to be carefully screened, there's one thing we've learned from the Internet, and that is that people like to see what they can slip by the screeners/censors.

as a well-established graphic designer ahem ahem
i would probably go with the third logo but i would try it without the yellow
phrizzo - August 25, 2010
Thanks. I thought about that as well but forgot to do it.
Basketball John - August 25, 2010
Any other thoughts? Tweaks?
Basketball John - August 25, 2010
the blue and orange are closest to complimentary so they make the best contrast and the logo will pop more. i wouldn’t mind seeing the yellow/orange “slc” with the small “dunk” in blue. maybe!
phrizzo - August 25, 2010
1 – I vote we get the entire crowd to hiss when boozer gets the ball
8 – I like the third one the very most.
murderousmalone - August 25, 2010
I like the 3rd one too
I like it exactly as it is. It looks very retro. Without the yellow, I don’t know that you’d be able to immediately tell it was a basketball.
mogwash - August 25, 2010
I like the 3rd one
I would try it without the yellow behind Dunk. Keep the Yellow around the outside of the ball.

#5
I voted Hayward, but only because Raja Bell was not an option… What’s up with that?!
vizzle07 - August 25, 2010
Crap. I'll fix that.
Guess I’m still not used to having him back.
Basketball John - August 25, 2010

I like the third the best, but I like them all better than the new official logo.
El Aguacil - August 25, 2010
Lurker alert!
First time poster, it’s good to be out here
8 – third logo for sure. #’s 1 and 2 look too much like Yankees logos.
5 – Memo, as he’ll be parked out on the perimeter rehabbing his achilles and making space for some combo of Big Al, Mansap, and AK to move around down there.
Coach Couch - August 25, 2010
hey there!
and i agree with #5 totally
AllThatJazzBasketball - August 25, 2010
I was going to say that the logo looks like the Yankees logo too, but I thought I would be on my own.
clarkpojo - August 25, 2010
that 4th one is sick, i’d wear that shirt
handlogten - August 25, 2010
First time poster, long time reader. Love the blog, especially during these late-summer doldrums!
1. I was pondering just the other day what could be done about boos/booze upon his return. I don’t particularly want to boo him, nor do I really want to give him huge cheers either. I love the silence idea.
8. Of those four, I definitely am drawn to the bottom left. What if you were to play with the line weight? Right now there is no difference of thickness/weight between the SLC text and the secondary basketball shape. Another possibility is to fill in the basketball shape entirely.
I’m including a link to a Picasa album with some quick demos (emphasis on quick) of what I’m talking about. It also includes a sketch of the idea I have been mulling over the last couple of days. Turns out it is similar to what El Aguacil proposed, which means that the same potential problem applies: by force of habit, it is easy to read the ‘d’ as a ‘j’, which is no good in this case. Oh well, I kinda like it anyway.

5. The Flash. I’m getting more and more stoked to see him play. I envision him becoming an essential cog for the Jazz, hopefully sooner than later.
I’d consider Memo, but I’m not getting my hopes up that he’ll be up and running at full speed soon. His is a nasty, nasty injury to come back from.
nel812 - August 25, 2010
love all the lurkers coming out of the woodwork!
stay a while guys!
AllThatJazzBasketball - August 25, 2010

Potential with your mock-Jazz logo. I’d vote that one with some color!

Thanks Coach!
I threw some color on just for kicks

i love it. love love love it.

I like
By not having the bar extend over the top (or to be nerdy : making it a quarter note instead of an eighth), I think you made the it look much more like a D than in my version
El Aguacil - August 25, 2010
Piggybacking off your idea:
Wilder. - August 25, 2010
I like it. I do think you need to remove the tag at the top of the ‘d’, however. Otherwise it reads ‘junk’. No good. This is not that kind of blog.
nel812 - August 25, 2010
I like it too, But it kind of looks like funk and thats what I thought at first. That might go good with Jazz though.
neds - August 25, 2010
I saw that too. I like that it looks like ‘funk’, but if it looks remotely like ‘junk’ I think that (sadly) the bad outweighs the good.
nel812 - August 25, 2010
How about this?
Wilder. - August 25, 2010
Or this?

I like the second one—its more readable.

Subtle change:
Wilder. - August 25, 2010
Oh yea
Im really diggin this one!
Asmaki - August 26, 2010
BTW
How do you embed an image in a comment? I’m too impatient to try and translate computer speak when I google a how-to.
nel812 - August 25, 2010
in the comment box
there’s an icon with a tree on it (the furthest right)
moni - August 25, 2010
Yeah, but it requires a url. I tried using Picasa to upload the image to the internet, but it didn’t create the proper link like I had hoped. Like I said, I have to translate the how-to’s. I don’t get it and I feel incompetent. sigh
nel812 - August 25, 2010
you could try an image hosting site
like http://imageshack.us/
just upload your image and it spits out a link
moni - August 25, 2010
I recommend tinypic.com
I have used ImageShack, PhotoBucket, and Flickr. TinyPic has been the best for both pictures and animated gifs.
Wilder. - August 25, 2010
You need to right-click on the picture and select "View Image".
Then just copy the url and paste it into the box that pops up here in the comment box.
You can also adjust the size by inserting ‘width=200’. Example:

Regular image size
Re-sized to width=150
This is what the code looks like with the image re-sizing:
<img src=“http://lh3.ggpht.com/_OWJL5s80jmc/THWm1HpgBI/AAAAAAAAAGg/GYu5xHFOMC4/s800/slc%20dunk%20with%20color.jpg” width=150/>

THANK YOU!
You all rock! Thanks for the tips.
I like the re-work Wilder. No more junk!

1.the thing that we fans fail to see — all indications suggest that Carlos Boozer is a decent human being outside of the realm of sports and sport finances. he does not appear to be very loyal at all – but today’s athlete isn’t like the ones we grew up following. he’s not going to malone it by going on the raidio, talking about leaving, — and then NOT leave for theoretically greener pastures. he will leave, and he has left. This is about money, and possibly, not having to get punked by the lakers in the playoffs anymore. If the Jazz could give him the money he wanted maybe he would have stayed here. That said, I don’t think the Jazz wanted him for that hefty price tag. This is a mutual divorce that benefits both parties. It did not have to be a messy divorce – and gladly it’s not. What kind of a complex have we small market fans developed if we expect guys who leave our team to bad mouth us?
2. of course, if sloan calls it quits, the job is phil’s to turn down first. he may want to coach again, or not. who knows? i think ty will be the next head coach if both sloan and phil leave the same off-season. (which opens up the door to getting horny the 3rd coaching spot, moving scott up to assistant)
8. i just really love the color change of the website, i couldn’t care less about the logo design.
5. memo shot 40 % not too long ago. having al and paul do all the work inside means he’ll be outside more this season. should be fun.
AllThatJazzBasketball - August 25, 2010
1. Booz, whatever. I’m so over you. It’s the Al Jefferson and Milsap show now. Enjoy Chicago tard.
2. If they both step down at the sametime I’d LOVE to see Horny get a chance to coach or Ty Corbin.
8. I like the last 2.
4. Meh.
5. I think Bell or Williams does.
ForTheLove - August 25, 2010
Sweet new logos
The 3rd one is rad!

3rd 3rd 3rd 3rd 3rd 3rd 3rd 3rd 3rd 3rd….I’m kinda partial to the third logo…

I like the 4th Logo.

FIRST POST!
I need to post. I read daily. It’s a great place to get additional insight. Thanks everybody!
1) Complete silence would be awesome! How many times has that ever happened? I’m all for silence for the BOOZ on his return.
2) It’s hard to believe Coach Johnson would stick around w/o Coach Sloan. He understands his role…..AND does a great job!
8) #4 logo would look great on a shirt.
4) Well I guess that’s how the world is turning.
5) Raja should lead the team in . I see Memo shooting more but not hitting as a high %. Both those guys should get their fair share of looks w/Big Al and Millsap down low. Raja in a couple of full seasons (PHX) shot 400+ 3s @ 41-44 whereas Memo in a couple of full seasons shot around 300 @ around 38%. Plus it seems like Memo is pretty hot and cold at times during the season. I guess we’ll see. I hope they both launch 350+ @ 42% or something. :)
Kurt Adison - August 25, 2010
welcome!
moni - August 25, 2010
350+ @ 42% is a lofty goal, but technically possible, I suppose.
Okur’s best year was in 08-09 when he shot 45% from the 3, but he only took 202 3 pointers. He has shot over 38% the last 4 seasons which is impressive. In 06-07 he shot 336 3’s and made 38%. I would almost prefer 320 attempts at 38% than 200 attempts at 45%, because it would mean he was letting ’em fly and not pump faking.
Raja Bell has shot over 40% from the 3 point line 6 years in his career which is super impressive. His best statistical year, was in 05-06 (446 attempts, 44%). Raja Bell is your safer bet for having a higher shooting percentage since he has been more consistent.
Bottom line: if Okur and Bell both go for 350+ attempts and 42%, we will be like the Magic West and we will win 55+ games.
clarkpojo - August 26, 2010
1. i will applaud boozer
(theoretically speaking, if i were at a game) because i’m so happy he’s in another team’s uniform that it’s all bygones as far as i’m concerned.
5. who are the three people that voted for AK? did they not understand the question? no one loves AK more than me, but come on now…
